Grey
His inability to breakthrough into mainstream music even after 15 years as an underground artiste is what up and coming hiplife artiste, Grey, says influenced the making of his new hiphop song, Story of a Hustler.

For many young artistes such as Grey, getting the needed attention and recognition for their talent “takes a divine intervention” and that is what he chronicles in the song.

He is currently promoting the video of Story of a Hustler on some TV stations after being released last month.

Directed by Army Music located at Madina, the video is set in some slums at Madina. It tells the story of how Grey, a young man with great potential struggles to make head way in his career.

In the quest to seek a breakthrough, he makes contact with friends who he is confident can help him but dash his hopes. On a daily basis, he makes a “trip” to some studios for better luck but that wasn’t enough to get him the help he needed.

There are many young talents yet to be unearthed and Grey puts the blame on the doorstep of MUSIGA for their inability to structure the Union in such a way to attend to the needs of many young artistes.

“The industry is all about who you know and these people determine what they want you to do. I have had the opportunity to meet people who are in the position to help me but the problem is that, they do not want you to do your own style.

“Everybody wants you to be like Sarkodie or rap like him but the question is, ‘can we all be like Sarkodie. Don’t we need variety?’” he queried.

He said that it was based on such a premise that he is calling for the establishment of a well structured music industry that will cater for the needs of young artistes like himself.

He also took a swipe at artistes who look down on their colleagues who rap in local dialects remarking, “Sarkodie didn’t need to rap in English before getting to where he is now. Let us promote our culture and language through our music,” he stated

Real name, Grey Nana Antwi Karikari, Grey is not all that new to the music scene. He was a member of the hiplife group, Mobile Boyz, when they released their debut single, Mobile Phone, ,which featured Reggie Rockstone in 2006.

He went solo in 2009 and has since then released some songs like Woni Hwan, I Can’t Breathe which features Tinny, Who I Be? with Edem, and No Man Can featuring Trigmatic and Reggie Rockstone.

He is working on the release of his debut album in December and hopes to get considerable attention with the video of his song.
