Afrika Bambaataa & DJ Kool Herc are among the performers at this weekend's festival.
This weekend, the South by South Bronx Festival aims to provide a reminder of Hip Hop's deeply-rooted tradition.
“More than anything we wanted to have a festival that represents Hip
Hop culture and not the Rap music industry,” said Rodrigo “RodStarz”
Venegas, of the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective, which helped organize the
event, to NY Daily News.
“Hip Hop culture ... represents values of unity, of justice, of
peace. And we don’t feel like the corporate-driven Rap music industry
represents that."
The South by South Bronx festival, which began Friday (December 14),
will continue through Saturday (December 15) at Hostos Center, and will
feature DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, and renowned
B-Boy Popmaster Fabel.
Saturday features conversations with Bambaataa and Herc, as well as
performances from Grandmaster Caz, DJ Grand Wizard Theodore - credited
with discovering scratching, Sadat X, and many more.
The event will go from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM today. For more details,
